“Screenwriting for Teens” is a 228-page guide on the 100 principles of screenwriting. Written by Christina Hamlett, a professional script coverage consultant, the book is an incredible resource for any writer looking to improve.

Organized into 100 two-page concepts, “Screenwriting for Teens” offers wisdom on everything from catchy loglines to character naming to genre scripting. The concepts begin at the basis for screenwriting, how films tell stories, and progress through building themes, character development, plot building and conflict, setting, literary devices, film genres, and plenty more. Keeping each two-page section brief but incredibly detailed and informative allows the reader to expand their comprehension on any area of the screenwriting process while staying engaged. Probably the best feature about Hamlett’s book is that it goes over EVERY aspect of screenwriting, assuming the reader has little to no experience or knowledge in the field.

Christina Hamlett’s expertise shines through her writing as she incorporates websites and film examples that correlate and demonstrate each concept, helping the reader connect the ideas to previous knowledge. Brainstorming questions linked to each concept also help connect to the readers’ own personal work.

Not only is this book a great introduction to screenwriting, but it will heavily impact your day-to-day writing skills as well. Throughout the book, I found myself jotting down self-improving strategies for my own writing. For example, in concept number 10 Hamlett conveys that “knowledge is credibility” and the more you know about a subject the easier and better your writing about it will be. This is certainly not limited to screenwriting.

Well-written and simplified so anybody can follow along, Hamlett has mastered the technique of complete conveyance. This is definitely a book to add to your library!
