Studica Skills is an online community, hosting competitions exclusive to students across the United States and Canada. Sponsored by the software and hardware manufacturers that both students and teachers love to use; Studica Skills offers a variety of competition categories, from comic book design to digital video editing; from scriptwriting to music composition. The Competition Themes are quite varied and creative. The Studica Skills Team put great effort into making the competitions not only challenging, but fun for the students as well: “We want the students and educators to be excited about their participation in our program,” states Frank Nanfara, President of Torcomp, Inc, parent company of Studica.com and StudicaSkills.com. Nanfara continues, “We hand selected not only the most popular software, hardware, and music technology products to be utilized in the Studica Skills competitions; but we were also careful to include some incredible, but lesser known products. We want Educators and Students to have access to the best, most creative technology out there. We want to help raise awareness of what is available.” Even though the competitions are free to enter, Torcomp and Studica obviously incur great expenses at not only maintaining the Studica Skills site, but by awarding all of the cash and prizes associated with the program. Partners and Sponsors to the Studica Skills program help greatly by contributing great prizes for the students, as well as some of the prize money that is awarded to the final winners in each competition. Additionally, Studica.com has “Skills Pricing” on many of the products that may be used to participate in the competitions. Skills Pricing is an additional discount given to a student or educator in exchange for their participation in the Studica Skills competitions. Torcomp and Studica’s rich history with manufacturers makes them a natural host for an event as big as the Studica Skills Competitions. Torcomp and Studica represent over 300 product lines as an authorized academic reseller. Sponsors of the Studica Skills Competitions include Adobe Systems, Autodesk, Corel, Mackie, Propellerhead, Quark, SONY, and Toon Boom. With sponsored prizes including free software, hardware, music equipment, and electronics; it’s no surprise how popular the Studica Skills Competitions have become. Visit StudicaSkills.com and watch students compete for a place in the Final Round of the competitions. Finalists are determined by popular vote until May 11th, and the Top 20 entries are then evaluated by a panel of judges to determine the three Grand Prize Winners for each competition. For every unique competition category, there is a unique panel of judges, consisting of professors and instructors who teach or have expertise in the relevant field of the competition, qualified Studica Skills staff members, industry experts, and sponsored staff. The positive response we’ve received from students and teacher alike, have ensured another round of Studica Skills Competitions, starting May 12th and ending April 28th 2008. Opportunities for teachers or school administrators to oversee each diverse competition and become an official Studica Skills Competition Chairperson will be available. Responsibilities would include general competition theme input, as well as another source for student entrants to email inquiries to. Please see individual competitions for additional information for this opportunity. Studica Skills has been successful at taking suggestions from participants and incorporating new ideas into competitions. Since the Studica Forums was established, students and faculty have voiced their opinions, asked questions, and received friendly feedback from members of the Studica Skills Team. All members of the academic community are welcome to visit the Studica Forums, at Studica.com/forums. When asking students what they would love to see more from Studica Skills, the general consensus is More Prizes! We are constantly sending teachers and professors the necessary materials to promote Studica Skills in the classroom. From posters to notepads, to catalogs to t-shirts; teachers and students benefit from the fun stuff we send them! Request materials for your classroom at StudicaSkills.com/school. Educators are encouraged to incorporate Studica Skills competitions into their curriculum and have their students participate in multiple competitions. The Studica Skills competition can be used as not only a gauge against other students around the U.S. and Canada; but as a source of inspiration and creativity for educators and students alike. Studica Skills is a great learning tool for all involved. Register your class for the Studica Skills competitions at StudicaSkills.com to combine fun themes, education, and the chance to win great prizes.
