SchoolTube is a consumer media company dedicated to supporting educational institutions and all their students to broadcast, watch, and share original videos as well as broadcast live educational topics worldwide through a Web experience.  It is available in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and US schools located across the world. According to Carl Arizpe, SchoolTube founder and President, their mission is to educate and empower educators and students in safe effective video production and internet publishing.

“SchoolTube is the only Internet Video Publisher for teachers and students which combines dynamic curriculum and community outreach programs”, says Arizpe. “All videos must be approved by registered teachers, follow local school guidelines and adhere to the STN Code of Ethics.”

SchoolTube’s partnership with STN leverages a nationwide network of broadcast journalism teachers and students. Through this innovative partnership, SchoolTube provides the latest information to member schools and teachers at the click of a mouse.

“When a school becomes a member of SchoolTube and STN, it will have full access to  lesson plans, equipment recommendations, fundraising techniques, and many other resources to support teachers”, says Arizpe.

We caught up with Carl and had a chance to ask some key questions.

SVN: How does the SchoolTube process work?

CA: Videos are uploaded to SchoolTube and converted into Flash media. The Flash streaming media files are then stored and entered into the appropriate categories and subcategories. When a viewer selects a video, it is streamed to the viewer’s computer.

SVN: Do you keep a copy of the original video?

CA: Uploaded videos are stored in their original format and future plans for the SchoolTube service include allowing teachers to download video footage for use in their classroom as B-roll or for use in assignments, etc..

SVN: Can I download videos for later viewing?

CA: The system is not designed for downloading of videos for viewing offline. Videos are served up as streaming Flash media which requires an Internet connection.

SVN: How are the videos viewed?

CA: The videos are organized in a variety of ways…you can select a video by first choosing a category, then a subcategory, or you can search for a video.  Once a video is selected, it will appear in the player.

SVN: What do I need to have to view the videos?

CA:
You need a Windows or Macintosh computer with an internet connection and Flash 8 player (or higher) installed. Most computers currently accept and play Flash media without any action required.

SVN: Who is allowed to upload videos?

CA: Any current K-12 student, teacher, or administrator who is registered with SchoolTube is eligible to upload videos. However, all videos uploaded to SchoolTube must be TEACHER APPROVED. During the registration process students will be required to pick a moderator to review their videos.

SVN: What restrictions are there on uploading a video?

CA:  As mentioned before, videos uploaded to SchoolTube must be TEACHER APPROVED.  Also, videos must adhere to SchoolTube's Standards.

SVN: Is a video that you want to upload to SchoolTube allowed to contain ANY copyrighted music, images or video footage?

CA:  No, unless you can provide SchoolTube with a copyright release or proof that you own the copyright, BEFORE uploading a video. Otherwise, please do not upload it. Any video found to contain copyrighted material will be inactivated and forwarded on to an advisory panel for review. Videos found to violate SchoolTube's Standards will be removed from the system.

SVN: How does one upload a video?

First create a free
SchoolTube account. Once you’re logged in click on the “Upload Video” tab and follow the instructions. After your video has been uploaded, it will need to be approved by a moderator. Once it's approved, your video will be live on SchoolTube!

SchoolTube is free for basic users with revenue streams generated from premium school memberships, advertising, product referrals, and affiliate partner programs.

SchoolTube is a stage for not just students, but their family, teachers, and administrators.  The new clip culture is expanding rapidly, and SchoolTube provides organization, locality, and national exposure for our students’ quality videos.
