John Churchman, Publisher This issue marks a milestone in the publication of School Video News and we are excited that you are part of it. Without our readers, we would not be at the point in our short life where we are. WELCOME to our first double issue featuring the Michigan Association for Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) annual conference. As this is our home state, we would be remiss if we did not honor and recognize the educators who give so much of their time and energy to the students in their charge. Through organizations such as MACUL, our teachers have technology resources at their fingertips. Whether it is through Special Interest Groups, the annual conference such as this one, workshops, blogs, or the MACUL Journal, MACUL is an association of individuals with a common goal: to inspire learning in the youth of our state. We are privileged to help. Browse through this special supplement to visit Michigan schools to see how they are using broadcast technology to inform and entertain in their regions and districts. ANOTHER FIRST this month is the creation of the School Video News / SchoolTube.com Broadcast Center. This studio is an example of what middle or high schools could create with a reasonable budget. During the MACUL conference and other educational events, the Broadcast Center will be used to create programming germane to the specific venue. Staffed by local middle and high school TV production students, the Broadcast Center will also be home to student news teams covering the event. AND THERE’S MORE: beginning this month we will introduce a new series on schools, colleges and universities that can take your students to the next level. In addition, we will have graduates talk about their experiences in getting jobs in the world of broadcast technology and broadcast journalism after graduation. NEW AUTHORS, TOO. This month, meet Jeff Rowe, news director of KDOC-TV in Santa Ana, California and former staff writer for The Wall Street Journal, the Associated Press and Orange County Register. Jeff will be working with us on writing skills and concepts that will carry over into other core academic areas particularly language arts. Meet Bill Davis, creator of the Start Editing Now! training video will begin writing on various topics including videography, editing, and short tips on production. Next month we will introduce Michael Schoonmaker, Chairman of the Television, Radio, Film Department at the Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University. Author of Cameras in the Classroom, Michael will help us deepen our article base throughout the K-12 environment providing useful insight to the use of video in all grade levels. And of course our commercial message: New titles coming to the Online Store. We are introducing school-friendly prices so you can build your personal or tech center library. If you have a title that you want, email me and I’ll see if we can get it. Remember, as John Lubbock said, “The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn”. That’s what you are doing. Thank you all for your ongoing commitment to your profession. John Churchman Publisher
