We had a chance to talk to Andrew Favor, head of Eagle’s TV Production program.

SVN: Andy, tell us about your background and how you decided to start teaching TV/Video production?

AF:  I attended the University of Idaho and got my B.S. degree in Visual Communication.  When it came time to look for work I was interested in Sports Broadcasting but found a part-time Master Control job at Channel 9 in Boise.  The job quickly became full time and then I moved into commercial production.  I wrote scripts, shot video and edited video to make commercials for Channel 9 eventually becoming the Production Manager for 8 years. At that time I mentioned to a friend that I was interested in teaching video at a school.  A short time afterward Eagle High contacted me about an interview and I was hired.  This is my second year at Eagle.

SVN: How did you obtain initial funding for your program? How do you fund the class now?

AF: I was lucky walking into the Eagle High position because the facilities were already in place.  My funding comes from State money and grants that are shared in our district and student fees.

SVN: Did you have equipment available?

AF: We had 3 studio cameras (Sony DV-Cam) on rolling tripods each with a teleprompter. We have a studio desk and lights and two lav mics.  We also have one Sony HD camera and one Sony VX-2000 for shooting in the field.  We produce our announcements with a Globecaster switcher and a Mackie mixer.  I have since bought 5 new Panasonic camcorders, 5 wireless microphone systems, 5 tripods, and four light kits for my video tech classes.  We edit on 6 Sony computers running Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0.
